Press Release: L’gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures Volume 3 on Kickstarter!

01-July, 2019 – Power Up Gamer (PUG) is proud to announce the launching of its third Kickstarter for the next volume of its series of monster manuals, L’Gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures series. Continuing from volume one and two, the new product will include 26 new, flavourful creatures for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, this time focusing on the fantastical hostile and hellish denizens of L’Gat’s Prime Material Plane. The book will also carry the company ethos of supplying gamers with ways of making their games more accessible to a wider variety of people, especially those with sensory impairments and learning disabilities. This is done by suggesting language and methods that evoke the senses as well as outright descriptions of the beasts and their habitats.

As part of the marketing effort to raise awareness for the company and its Kickstarter, we are offering to outlets a PDF copy of our second release: L’Gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures Volume 2 for the purposes of review, as well as the opportunity to interview the team to discuss the Kickstarter and the company mission statement of increasing the accessibility of role playing games for those with special needs.

Power Up Gamer started in 2015 as a single YouTube channel for the company chairman, Jarin DND the Disabled DM, as a place for him to talk about his experience as a disabled roleplayer. This quickly grew to become a Facebook group where others shared their experiences as well. All facets of Power Up Gamer hold two clear goals:

  • To provide a place for disabled players to feel safe in discussing how their disabilities affect their gaming in Tabletop Roleplaying Games
  • To strive to bring awareness of disability issues to the larger RPG community.

In November 2017, the Kickstarter for volume one of L’Gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures launched and was successfully funded. In August, 2018, the Kickstarter for volume two was successfully funded. The Kickstarter for volume three of L’gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures is now live and will run until 12 P.M. EST on August 1st, 2019. Our initial funding Goal is $1,200 USD to cover the cost of artwork with stretch goals that offer backers of $25 USD or more the chance for a Custom Monster T-shirt featuring the Sky Kraken and an adventure module wrote specifically in the Setting of L’gat using the monsters from all 3 volumes. In addition, we also have a special pledge tier of $150 USD that offers a limited Edition Hardcover Signed Collector’s Volume which contains everything from all three Volumes of L’gat’s Tome of Amazing Creatures rolled into one convenient Package. Press Release: For Immediate Release Limitless Adventures to launch a DM-less adventure path

(Chenoa, Illinois – June 26, 2019) On July 1st, 2019 Limitless Adventures will launch a Kickstarter campaign for their new 5th Edition adventure path, The Blood Queen’s Defiance (BQD). The three-adventure arc is distinctive because it requires no dungeon master. The adventure features unique mechanics that allow for high replay value to ensure that it will be a different experience each time.

“This DM-less adventure is meant to reduce gamemaster burnout, as well as provide those groups that don’t have a dungeon master a way to still get together and roll dice with their friends. Everyday we hear from DMs on social media who wish they had a chance to play their favorite characters, but that they are the only member of their game group who will run a campaign” said Andrew Hand, co-founder of Limitless Adventures.

The Blood Queen’s Defiance will be Limitless Adventures’ tenth Kickstarter and it will run from July 1st until July 31st . BQD will be available as a print and play PDF or a premium box set. Both domestic and international shipping will be available.

Limitless Adventures was founded in 2016 by Andrew Hand and Michael Johnson. Limitless Adventures offers high-quality 5th Edition gaming products. They specialize in DM-friendly products that minimize your prep time so you can spend more time at the table playing and less time writing.

“With our new DM-less product, Limitless Adventures helps you battle the ultimate RPG boss fight… the schedule” says Michael Johnson, Limitless Adventures co-founder.

Additional information about The Blood Queen’s Defiance and its DM-less mechanics can be obtained by e-mailing Andrew Hand directly at andy.hand@limitless-adventures.com.

PRESS RELEASE: FATEFORGE CORE BOOKS

FATEFORGE CORE BOOKS

Fateforge Core Rulebook: Adventurers

400 pages, Hardcover, Full color

Adventurers is the core book, including thorough rules on character creation, the basic game system, an overview of the world, and an extensive catalog of equipment, all with plenty of exclusive content: feats, a background creation process, class archetypes, and even a new class named the Scholar.

Fateforge Spellbook: Grimoire

320 pages, Hardcover, Full color

Grimoire details spellcasting and magic in general, as well as corruption and madness. It goes over geomagic, a notion particular to Fateforge that refers to localized magical phenomena. This book also provides insight into the Awakening, a phenomenon through which an individual becomes able to use magic. Finally, Grimoire comprises a compendium of over 360 spells, including more than 50 new ones, as well as original options and variants.

ADVENTURERS AND GRIMOIRE

Added together, these two core books clock in at 700 pages filled with original options and additions exclusive to Fateforge’s epic universe. Here are the key elements:

  • Eana’s Universe. Find out about the civilizations and species of the world of Eana. Information is provided in particular about the Free City, Eana’s largest metropolis and the starting point of many adventures. You will also learn about Eana’s pantheon of entropic and harmonic deities.
  • Background Creation System. This process goes through half a dozen steps, complete with examples. In addition, ten premade backgrounds are available, to be used as such or as inspiration for your own backgrounds.
  • New Archetypes and a New Class. Each of the twelve base classes has been fitted with new archetypes. Discover the legendary Bladebonded, the unsettling Urban Shadow, or the unstoppable monks of the Way of Pain. An entirely original thirteenth class is also introduced: the Scholar.
  • Modular system. Fateforge’s modular system is based on one of the most popular aspects of the Shadows of Esteren system. Do you want your game to be representative of the canons of heroic fantasy? Use the rules labeled “Action” to make the characters all the more powerful and successful. Do you want to play a dark-fantasy, survival-oriented game? “Dark” and “Gritty” options have been designed for you and will give characters a hard time.
  • New Rules, New Feats. Many optional rules will let you add new aspects and intricacies to your campaign, such as the Wounds system, rules on sparing an opponent, a new “Incite” combat action, etc. Adventurers also includes 43 entirely new feats for your characters.
  • Geomagic, presented in Grimoire, is one of the unique ways magic functions in Eana. Geomagic occurs when magical currents are particularly weak or strong in a region, leading to supernatural phenomena in the area. The abilities of spellcasting adventurers may be hindered or boosted, become more chaotic, or simply have stronger repercussions. Sixteen geomagics are detailed, plus a game aid to help you create your own.
  • The Awakening is an event through which an individual becomes able to use magic, and Grimoire goes more in depth into this life-changing epiphany. Dedicated game aids and rules are provided for a better understanding of this peculiarity of Fateforge, so that you can make it part of your game in a way that corresponds to the premise and atmosphere of your campaign.
  • Madness and horror are associated with the effects of corruption, which is the expression of Canker’s mentally and physically deleterious influence. Canker is an omnipresent, undying entity of divine proportions whose corruption extends to the very substance of many enchantment, illusion, necromancy, and transmutation spells, making these spells risky to cast at best. However, some adventurers choose to willingly expose themselves to corruption, whether to gain insight into Canker or to draw power from the boons it provides… which are never without drawbacks.

Press Release: We Die Here

The small town of Heart sits amid mountains and ancient pine forests. It remains a lumber town to this day, even if ecological laws stifle the mill to near bankruptcy – the local mines already went belly up. A small landing strip ferries rich people to the nearby Pine View Hotel, or to the Clearbrook sanatorium to recuperate in the fresh mountain air.

An alien entity hailing from beyond the stars crashed in this place, which would later be Hearth, long before the first humans walked the land. It still remains, slipping into dreams as it dies – and its dreams reshape Hearth into its nightmarish home. Now, this eldritch being requires six sacrifices to enter the Dreamland – and remain there forever.

We Die Here is the upcoming indie game from Steffie de Vaan, freelance author and developer for gamelines such as Vampire the Masquerade Twentieth Anniversary Edition and Fifth Edition, Changeling the Lost Second Edition, and the upcoming Legendlore RPG. It releases this Friday, through the combined Patreon of Steffie and Elizabeth Chaipraditkul at https://www.patreon.com/lizandsteffie, if you pledge $5 or more.

We Die Here is a toolbox game, exploring the claustrophobia of living in a small, isolated town. The game comes with a free mini-scenario set in the fictional town of Hearth, and We Die Here helps gaming groups to come up with their own sleepy, creepy places. The game draws wider inspiration from Twin Peaks, Stephen King’s It, and Netflix’ Dark, where the town is as much a character in the story as its inhabitants.

Every character, including the town and its inhabitants, is governed by a Need, a Want, and a Secret. A Need is something they have and cannot bear to lose, a Want is something they do not currently possess but would give anything to, and a Secret is something dark and best kept hidden. Only the Town has an extra trait, named You Cannot Leave Because – this is the way by which it traps its inhabitants. The game uses these traits, and the resulting social and psychological conflicts, to resolve in-game actions.

In a twist on most horror games, We Die Here does not support traditional combat – characters can’t defeat monsters by simply hitting them. Instead, they need to be resourceful and clever, and know when to cut their losses and run. The game’s easy D6-based mechanics have a high lethality to further support the sensation of being trapped. The town won’t let them leave, the monster is coming – and they might die here.

We Die Here goes out to Patrons supporting $5 or more on https://www.patreon.com/lizandsteffie this Friday.

GMing for Tips

Giga-Bites Tabletop Gaming Café, an award-winning (2018 Power Retail Award – Outstanding Organized Play Program and 2019 GAMA Power Retail Award – Outstanding Marketing) tabletop gaming store in Marietta, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta) posted a job opening “for a part time position of Dungeon/Game Master to run one shot RPGs weekly.” I shared this on Facebook and Kenny Mahan responded with: “I used to pull 80-100 in tips each game I ran at my local store.” Making a hundred a game was worth a conversation.

[NOTES:

  • The Giga-Bites Café job is not presented as a tipped position.
  • Kenny Mahan did not work for Giga-Bites Café when he was GMing for tips.]

EGG EMBRY (EGG)Thanks for answering my questions about your time as a tipped GM. Let’s lead with the basics, where and when.

KENNY MAHAN (KM): Albuquerque, New MexicoFriday and Saturday evenings for most of 2018.

EGGWhat games did you run?

KM: Primarily Dungeons and Dragons 5E, but I also ran a short campaign of East Texas University.

[WRITER’S NOTE: East Texas University is a Savage Worlds setting. “East Texas University promises prestigious leadership, connected alumnae, the fantastic Southern climate of Pinebox, Texas…and annoying roommates, professors that try to kill you (literally), and things that go bump in the night. Enroll at your own risk.”]

EGG: How many players normally joined in

KM: On average I had about 6 players. The ETU game normally had four. At times I ran for 8 players with D&D.

EGG: How long was the typical game?

KM: Most games were a single day for the adventure. Most of the D&D games were Adventurers League. I would run linked adventures to help encourage the same players to come back to my table each week, and I also ran two of the hard backs from Wizards of the Coast – Curse of Strahd and WaterdeepDragonheist. The ETU game I ran started as a one-shot using an adventure I wrote and use as my hook for ETU. The campaign then moved to the Degrees of Horror plot-point campaign in the main books.

Stock art coins by Rick Hershey (Fat Goblin Games).

EGG: How did you pitch tips to the players? Were there any in-game rewards?

KM: The tips for running wasn’t pitched by me. The game store asks players at the store to tip their game masters. They host RPG nights and use volunteer GMs. The tips collected are collected by the store and are given back to GMs as store credit.  I can’t testify for all the other running games, but I never gave anything extra to my players ingame. The expectation for the tips was that I would run the best game that I could.

EGGIn your experience, what led to the best tips?

KM: The times I was tipped the best were when I had regular players week to week. As the sessions progressed, I made better tips. I also prepared for each week. I didn’t simply show up and run, I put in the work that all DMs wanting to run a strong game do. I read the mods, created maps, brought miniatures, used terrain when I could, and ran the best game that I could each week.

EGGWhat brought it to an end?

KM: I stopped running each week due to a couple factors. First, the store had no real organization in place to sign-in GMs or players during their regular play nights. The scheduled events were first come first served for everyone which meant it could be hard for a GM to get a table if they weren’t super early. This also caused issues for the players as each week they wouldn’t know if their GM would be there (unless they had contact information for them) and didn’t know which tables would be full. This also led to players not always knowing what level of character to bring since most of these games part Wizards of the Coasts Adventurers League, which has strict guidelines about character level and such for their modules.  This became a headache and hassle that really started to impact my enjoyment of running.

Secondly, my schedule got very busy with work commitments and I had to cancel quite a few sessions. So, I would call the store and let them know I wasn’t showing up, but I didn’t have full contact info for all of my players so they would show up expecting me to run and I wouldn’t be there. This was a very unfair situation to put them in and after needing to miss a few sessions I stepped away until things could calm down.

EGGIf someone approached you asking for advice on making this a worthwhile part-time job, what would you give them?

KM: If you are running games on a regular basis as a volunteer for a store you need to understand you are also now a representative of the store even if you aren’t tipped or paid for running. This means you are very much a doorman for these hobbies and it’s your responsibility to do your best to make sure your players feel welcome and have a good experience. If this is a paid position set up by the store, this all becomes a professional responsibility as well, treat it as such and you’ll be rewarded.

EGGAre you working on anything gaming-related?

KM:  I am currently adding to and modifying some articles I wrote for Ed Greenwood’s company to be put up on DMsGuild and working on getting a blog back up and going.

EGGThank you for sharing your experiences! Is there a good place for fans to check out your work?

KMDMsGuild has the two things I have out there (Familiars Found and Favor for Gond: A piece of Lantan found), and I was published in the Savage Worlds Explorer 4. I think the things I did for Greenwood are no longer up to buy, but I’d have to check.

Press Release: Slew of exciting new miniature releases for Achtung! Cthulhu RPG & miniature wargame

Slew of exciting new miniature releases for Achtung! Cthulhu RPG & miniature wargame

Modiphius Entertainment are delighted to announce the release of two brand new Unleashed miniatures for the Achtung! Cthulhu RPG and Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish games, Singh Unleashed and Ariane Unleashed, two spectacular new hero sculpts as reinforcements for your forces fighting the Secret War.

Singh Unleashed and Ariane Unleashed are part of the Achtung! Cthulhu and Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish collections and join other recent releases like the Black Sun CommandersPathfinder DemonhuntersLiebowitz and McMasters and Natalya Unleashed miniatures!

Singh Unleashed!

Larceny led Singh to possess the eye, desperation led to it opening. Throwing himself into ever more dangerous situations, Singh has further tapped into the power of the mysterious pendant he “found” in the jungle. Wherever he goes now, trailing fingers of the dark mist surround him, pulsating and grasping for anyone nearby. This isolates him from his fellow soldiers, but hides him from the enemy, making him hard to target on the battlefield.

When he reaches enemy lines, the true power of the amulet is revealed, as it fully opens, and Singh moves faster than can be followed. Appearing as though he’s in multiple places at once, Singh’s blade reaps a bloody harvest from German soldiers who barely even register that their doom has arrived.

Ariane Unleashed!

Ariane has been at the sharp end of the conflict for too long and has seen too many friends and allies fall. Her grip on the Demon that accompanies her was always tenuous, but now it has near broken. As a result, the creature can fully manifest charging into battle looking for prey.

Ariane will be found following in its wake, firing volleys from her twin Lugers, often cutting down the Demon’s intended victims before it reaches them. This small mercy is better than the alternative.

Press Release: Five times Ennie award-winning RPG launches Things from the Flood core book

Five times Ennie award-winning RPG launchesThings from the Flood core book.
Welcome back to the world of Tales From the Loop – things are different now.
Simon Stålenhag’s paintings of Swedish retro futuristic suburbia, populated by fantastic machines and strange creatures, have won global acclaim. The award-winning Tales from the Loop tabletop roleplaying game was released in 2017 and let you experience this amazing world first hand. Now you can return to the Loop in this stand-alone sequel game that continues the story into the 1990s. But remember – this time you can die.
Somewhere out there beyond the cordons, beyond the fields and marshes, abandoned machines roamed like stray dogs. They wandered about impatiently, restless in the new wind sweeping through the country. They smelled something in the air, something unfamiliar.
Perhaps, if we had listened closely, we would also have heard it. We may have heard the sound rising from the forgotten and sealed caverns in the depths: the muffled pounding from something trying to get out.
Key features of the beautifully illustrated hardcover book:
  • Create unique player characters – including skills, iconic items, and relationships – in mere minutes.
  • Dive deeper into the secrets of the Loop and experience the two game settings updated to the 1990s – the Mälaren Islands in Sweden and Boulder City, Nevada in the USA.
  • New rules for scars and death – the stakes are higher and the risks greater.
  • Investigate mysteries and overcome trouble using fast and effective rules, based on the award-winning Year Zero game engine.
  • Play the four complete scenarios included, tied together in the campaign named Prophets of Pandora.
Also available are the Things from the Flood GM Screen, Things from the Flood Dice Set and Tales from the Loop redesigned dice set.

Press Release: The Roleplayer’s Guide to Heists

The Roleplayer’s Guide To Heists is a system agnostic collection of around 25 heists ranging from your standard bank jobs, to space-based sci-fi capers, to fantasy smash-jobs into a wizard’s mind-realm. Kickstarter Launch June 15th!

The Roleplayer’s Guide to Heists

If you like stealing stuff (in games) and getting away with it (again, in the game), this book will have everything you could want!

Heists are some of the most fun you can have during an RPG session – the indepth planning, the nail biting execution, the thrilling escape and the glorious payoff! What’s not to love?

But heists can be hard to write and even harder to pull off properly. They take almost as much work as the real thing to plan, and that can bring your campaign to a grinding halt. Lucky for you, The San Jenaro Co-Op is here to help.

The Roleplayer’s Guide To Heists is a system agnostic collection of around 25 heists ranging from your standard bank jobs, to space-based sci-fi capers, to fantasy smash-jobs into a wizard’s mind-realm. If you like stealing stuff (in games) and getting away with it (again, in the game), this book will have everything you could want!

h4eTdcPEypgwFWzUJ9dvklYxitvB6BJ6b4SR5tB9.png

Each heist comes complete with a detailed map of the joint for you to properly case; oodles of scene hooks, enemies and traps, ideas for the getaway and of course the loot itself. As if that wasn’t enough, you can also look forward to essays on the finer points of thieving, heists and their narrative function.

The Roleplayer’s Guide to Heists will launch on Kickstarter on June 15th (here’s the public preview Kickstarter page) and will have different tiers for pledging available to suit most tastes, and with some very interesting rewards, like for example including your name as one of the people involved in the heist’s details (as a mobster, a special model of safe, the designer of a magical ward or anything else that takes your fancy. ) or bringing your own heist to life with the help of our talented crew.

This project will have a beautiful physical hardcover book as the final product, and also a digital PDF version, and the estimated delivery date is July 2020.

We put together a small 3 heist taster of what you can expect from the project that you can download for free right here! It contains The Shuttle Game – a thrilling modern day mission to steal a space shuttle, A Wizard Did It – a fantasy heist set inside a dimensional-shifting Wizard’s Tower, and Lights, Camera, Action! – A retro robbery set during a film premiere in the golden age of Hollywood!

The San Jenaro Co-Op is a 100% creator owned and profit shared group of people with different skills, interested in publishing tabletop role-playing games, focusing on people first, equitable money distribution, creator ownership and making kick ass games.

RPG Freelancing Corner with Andrew J Lucas

Recently, EN World shared James M. Wards’ article, “The Making and Breaking of Deities & Demigods”, discussing the behind-the-scenes dispute surrounding the famous first printing of Deities & Demigods for D&D 1e. I’ve never owned a first printing, so when I shared that fact on my Facebook all of my friends commented that they did and, more so, they bought theirs in 1981 from dear ol’ Gar himself when he was going door-to-door selling D&D like it was Encyclopedia Britannic but with a free demo gaming session. [WRITER’S NOTE 2019-05-30: Completely fictionalized made-up untruth. Save for the part where every gamer but me has a 1st printing of Deities & DemigodsI’m not bitter at all about that fact. At all. To be continued below.]

Among the folks I spoke with was Andrew J Lucas, which led to talk about what he’s freelancing on that was worth doing a write up about

EGG EMBRY (EGG): Hey, Andrew. What are you working on at the moment? 🙂

ANDREW J LUCAS (AJL)At the moment, I’m finishing off two adventures, one for TALOC: MAYAN and one for Endless Realms. Then some fiction. Always got something on the go. 🙂

EGG: Excellent! It’s good to see that publishers know the value of your work. Is the fiction for specific projects?

AJL: Yeah, it’s a dinosaur anthology coming out next year, and I have an Endless Realms story that needs finishing. Kirsty was disappointed in how the Endless Realms: Tome of Spirits performed on Kickstarter. I think next on tap is the Brimtide location I wrote. THAT will be fun.

Oh right, Rebel Minis is relaunching the Dark Hold Goblins line that I’m in charge of. We’re starting with a short adventure then a large compilation book with all 4 books in it.

EGG: In-charge? Wow! That’s AWESOME! Congratulations!

AJL: Mike and I have been so busy it feels like Dark Hold has been neglected but looking back we are actually still producing steadily.

EGGI’m glad it’s been steady progress. That’s better than mine (fits and starts).

AJL: Yeah, but any motion forward is good. For Dark Hold, we are planning to have two version for the compilation book. One SWADE [Savage Worlds] and one 5E [D&D].

EGG: Wow! SW and D&DThat’s ambitious and a good call. With that wide a net, it will find its home. 😀

AJL: That was our plan. Cut our teeth on a user-friendly system (SW) then move to where the money is. 🙂

But we will continue with SW with the new system.

EGGThat’s a good call! I have one one-sheet adventure published for SW. I appreciate my editors for fixing up my lack of understanding on the new system.

Let’s jump over to how the Endless Realms: Tome of Spirits Kickstarter went. When I spoke with her last, Kirsty Garbe of Lunar Games had greater hopes for ToS. I hate that the Kickstarter did not reach the levels it should have because the books look great.

AJL: The Tome of Spirits is great. But I think many people might have thought it was too focused. We’ve talked and I think we need some adventures and locations out there.

EGG: You may be right about Endless Realms. Adventures and locations will help, it’ll move copies of Spirits and the core rulebook as the gamers become aware of the system/world. I know it’ll find its audience. 🙂

AJL: It will be a big step forward for us. Brimtide is filled with locations and plot hooks and 4 full adventures, so I think that will help.

EGG: When you say full adventures, how long is each (are they one-shots or campaigns)? Do they interconnect?

AJL: In Brimtide, each adventure is about 10 pages, with enough encounters to last 2-3 game sessions.

EGG: With Brimtidethat’s a good length. 4 adventures, so a 40ish page book? That should be easy to fund and get out there. Any idea around the timeframe you’re thinking on?

AJL: Without the adventures the main text is 34K+. That has no NPC stat blocks yet.

EGG: 34k without blocks, that’s a nice project! I think it’s a good call. 😀

AJL: All locations, NPCs, history and such. The map is beautiful. I expect the entire book will be closer to 90 pages.

EGG: Ok, 90 pages is good! Who did the map? Is it a world map or more focused?

AJL: There will be lots of maps. A provincial map of the area, which can be used for the adventures which feature some of the locations on it: A full city map with, I think, 30 fleshed out locations, and 5 building maps including a tavern, a lighthouse and maybe a ship (as a stretch goal).

EGG: A lighthouse? I want to see that! It all sounds good! I’m eager to see this come out! 😀 Any idea on the date?

AJL: I think we talked about a Kickstarter launch in August.

KIRSTY GARBE: I doubt we can launch the Brimtide adventure in August simply because Kickstarter could pull the project since I would have yet to fulfill the physical rewards for the Tome of Spirits Kickstarter.

EGG: Very cool! I wish Lunar Games and you luck! I will be happy to cover it. 😀

AJL: Oh, I’m writing a spirit adventure too. Dilema at DedburnI’m considering making it a dual plane adventure where you flip into the spirit realm and the DM flips the book.

EGG: That sounds cool. Is D@D for Endless Realms or another system?

AJLEndless Realms.

EGG: Thanks for all you’ve shared. 😀

AJLYou’re welcome. None of that is secret. 🙂

EGG: Thanks, again. For fans interested in learning more about your work, where can they find out more about you?

AJL: Mostly on Facebook. I use Twitter rarely, mostly because I’m too busy. I’ve been freelancing since the late 80’s but never really got around to making a Blogspot or website.  My writing shows up all over the place, usually because I’m attracted to a neat project and my day job is secure enough that I can play around in plenty of sandboxes.  Wait until you see the two adventures I wrote for Carbon 2185, I really brought a Bladerunner vibe to the adventures that I think will get all the fans jazzed.

This year I’m especially excited as you can tell with my contributions to Endless Realms, but I also have comics coming with Cornerstone Studios and each year I have short fiction appearing in two or three anthologies.

[WRITER’S NOTE: One of my roleplaying group received their Carbon 2185 playtest copy, so I’m looking forward to playing that!]

EGG: Interested in trying out Endless Realms? They have products at DriveThruRPG (here) or you can join the Endless Realms: Tome of Spirits Kickstarter Pledge Manager (for late pledges).

[WRITER’S NOTE 2019-06-05: Out of the clear blue, Andrew J Lucas sent me a 1st printing of Deities & Demigods for D&D 1e. That was totally unexpected and an amazing gift! I’m still stunned that this book that was my 1e Holy Grail arrived in the mail. Gaming and gamers make me happy! Thank you, Andrew J Lucas!]

Press Release: PALLADIUM BOOKS® WEEKLY UPDATE – MAY 30, 2019

PALLADIUM BOOKS® WEEKLY UPDATE – MAY 30, 2019

BY KEVIN SIEMBIEDA

ONE GAME SYSTEM – EVERY GENRE – COUNTLESS WORLDS – ENDLESS ADVENTURE

I hope those of you who had a long weekend enjoyed yourselves. I worked through most of it figuring I’d have three days of quiet to move along Rifts® Bestiary™ and I did. Email problems and computer issues plagued us since the last Weekly Update, devouring Wayne’s time, so we are only now getting into the laying out phase of Rifts® Bestiary™ Volume One. I took that time to go back into the manuscript and do additional embellishments on some of the beasts. I really want this book to be a crowd-pleaser and wow people. I also wrote what I thought might be a Foreword to the book, but I’m not sure I’m going to use it, so I’ll include it here in this Weekly Update as my Closing Thoughts.

Those difficulties we had sending out mass emails meant we were unable to email the May 23rd Weekly Update, and we apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused you. We hope you didn’t miss out on the mind-blowing Rifts® sale that ran from last Thursday through yesterday. We were able to send out a couple “sale ends soon” emails that should have reached most of you.

NEW Sale: All Dead Reign® and most Nightbane®, and select other titles featuring the undead and darkness, are on sale now through next Wednesday at prices to send chills down your spine. The sale takes place here in Palladium Books’ online store PLUS a similar sale is taking place on DriveThruRPG for PDF titles. We figured with the new season of Fear the Walking Dead returning this weekend, we’d put Dead Reign® and other dark settings on sale. But it is only for a short time, so please spread the word!

Otherwise, we continue to push forward with work on several titles. While our main focus is getting Rifts® Bestiary™ Volume One to the printer and into your hands, other books are coming along too. At this stage, that’s mostly writing, editing and artwork by others. The next book release will be The Rifter® #83, filled with truly great adventure source material. Then Dead Reign®: In the Face of Death™ sourcebook and Garden of the Gods™ sourcebook for Palladium Fantasy. As I mentioned last Update, I may flip the release order of those two and do Garden of the Gods™ then In the Face of Death™. I still haven’t decided yet, but fantasy is calling me. Then with a little luck and hard work, Chaos Earth® Psychic Scream™ and/or The Rifter® #84 will quickly follow and all four of five titles will be available by the end of July. On top of that, we have people working on Rifts® Antarctica and Rifts® Titan Robotics™, along with a number of other titles, including books for Palladium Fantasy.

I am updating each and every one of them, making every creature feel like something new and expanded. Each one a comprehensive description filled with fun surprises and ideas for adventure and various uses by players and G.M.s alike. Beasts from across the Megaverse and ranging from delightful and helpful to monstrous and alien. Roughly 100 monsters and animals in the Rifts® Bestiary Vol. One, alone. Plus words from Erin Tarn about the wilderness of North America. June release.

In the Face of Death

UPDATE: IN THE FACE OF DEATH, A SOURCEBOOK FOR DEAD REIGN®

The next book on my schedule. I expect this one to go quickly. Artwork is done. As soon as I am finished with Rifts® Bestiary™ Volume One, I dive into finishing In the Face of Death™. A June/July release.

Garden of the Gods

UPDATE: GARDEN OF THE GODS™ – SUMMER RELEASE

The cover is being painted and the interior artwork that is already coming in is looking great. This Palladium Fantasy sourcebook should be fuel for countless adventures and will be followed by the Lopan world book which explores the rest of the island nation, its people, and more adventure.

Garden of the Gods™ is a unique adventure engine that should give players and Game Masters plenty of fuel for their characters and games. The Raw Preview Edition gives you a great idea of what you can expect when the finished book is released later this summer. We cannot wait to get all these books into your hands. I am shooting for an end of July/Gen Con release, but August is probably more realistic.

Chaos Earth Psychic Scream

Rifts Antarctica

UPDATE: RIFTS® ANTARCTICA

Nothing new to report. I think Rifts® Antarctica™ is going to surprise and delight a lot of people. It is also a great example of the fun you can have with the Raw Editions. The sold out Rifts® Antarctica Raw Edition is a far cry from what the finished book is going to be. Those of you who bought the Raw Edition get a glimpse at Palladium’s creative process. When you compare the two, you’ll see what we kept, what we eliminated, what we added, and how we embellished the material to reach the creative finale of the finished book coming this fall or winter. Fun and educational for those of you who aspire to be writers yourself or just like to have the inside track at Palladium. And true of all Raw Editions vs the finished book. Probably a fall or winter release.

UPDATE: THE DISAVOWED, LIVING NOWHERE, BEYOND THE SUPERNATURALSOURCEBOOKS, AND OTHER TITLES

These titles and several others are NOT forgotten and are in various stages of active production or waiting for production. As always, just because a book is not specifically listed in every Weekly Update, it does not mean it is discontinued or in limbo, it means there are more immediate things to talk about or there’s no substantive news to report. We are anxious to put as many of the books you’ve been waiting for into your hands as possible over the next 18 months. That includes Chaos Earth® First Responders™, Rifts® AntarcticaRifts® CS Arsenal™, Rifts® Living Nowhere™, Beyond the Supernatural™ sourcebooks, more Fantasy sourcebooks and other titles. So if a book you are waiting for is not mentioned in an Update, it means there is nothing new to report, but it should still be in the pipeline and news for it will be coming in the weeks or months ahead. Right now, we are focused on releases for the next six months, which by our count is 6-7 titles. And many of them are in various stages of production or development.

Press Release: Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit

May 28, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Leap into the Dark Future with the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit
A New Introduction to the World of Cyberpunk!

Kenmore, WA: R. Talsorian Games has announced an August 1, 2019 release for the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit, a boxed set containing everything players need to start playing Cyberpunk Red, the newest edition of the original tabletop roleplaying game of the Dark Future.

Set in the years between the classic tabletop roleplaying game Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming AAA video game from CD Projekt Red, the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit is the perfect entry point for gamers new to tabletop gaming as well as veterans who want to learn how the game’s rules and world have evolved.

Inside the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit box, players will find:

  • A lore and adventure book detailing the world of Cyberpunk Red. Also included is a full, ready to play scenario and “Screamsheets”, a combination of in-universe news story and game information which players can use to create new adventures.
  • A rulebook containing the essential rules needed to play the game, engage in frenetic combat, and hack their way through digital networks. The Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit uses a new version of R. Talsorian Games’ original Interlock game engine.
  • Six pregenerated characters: the Fixer, the Netrunner, the Nomad, the Rocker, the Solo, and the Tech. Each character comes ready to play but can be further customized using an abbreviated version of the famous Cyberpunk Lifepath system.
  • Four maps to help players visualize their environments, from hard streets to glittering nightclubs.
  • Six dice: two ten-sided dice and four six-sided dice.
  • And more!

Designed by award winning game designer Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk universe, the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit remains true to the gritty roots of the original while serving as a gateway to the future of the line. R. Talsorian Games is proud to offer this entry-level product to the gaming community and is confident those who use the Jumpstart Kit to explore the Dark Future will go on to explore the game and world deeper via the Cyberpunk Red core rulebook, due out later in 2019.

The Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit will make its debut at Gen Con 2019 in Indianapolis on August 1st and will be for sale there at booth 1852. It will also be available as a digital download, minus the dice, via DriveThruRPG.com on the same day. Physical copies of the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit will be available via the R. Talsorian Games webstore and through retailers shortly afterwards.

Additional information about Cyberpunk can be found at https://rtalsoriangames.com/

PALLADIUM BOOKS® WEEKLY UPDATE – MAY 23, 2019

BY KEVIN SIEMBIEDA

ONE GAME SYSTEM – EVERY GENRE – COUNTLESS WORLDS – ENDLESS ADVENTURE

Lately my thoughts have been all about blowing minds and Wow Factor with our books. So with that in mind, I thought we’d do a massive, mind-blowing Rifts® SALE here in our online store AND a similar sale on DriveThruRPG – ALL Rifts® titles (except for those we are running very low on) at a discount that should send shudders throughout the Megaverse®. But only for a short time. Spread the word!

The Rifts® Bestiary™ Volume One enters into the layout phase. I’m still doing a bit of last minute writing, but Wayne is about to start laying out the book. As a big book with maps and art for each beast, that should take about a week. Then it is off to the printer!

The next book release will be The Rifter® #83, filled with great adventure source material. Then Dead Reign®: In the Face of Death™ sourcebook and Garden of the Gods™ sourcebook for Palladium Fantasy. Actually, depending on which I feel the hottest writing, I may flip the release order of those two. I haven’t decided yet. And with luck, Chaos Earth® Psychic Scream™ and/or The Rifter® #84 all out by the end of July. On top of that, we have people working on Rifts® Antarcticaand Rifts® Titan Robotics™ along with a number of other titles, including books for Palladium Fantasy.

Hey, it’s the holiday weekend, so I will keep this Update short. Enjoy the sales and your long weekend.

MIND-BLOWING RIFTS® SALE – NOW THRU MAY 29, 2019

ALL Rifts® titles on sale (except for those we are running very low on) are available now through the weekend, and until Wednesday night, at prices that will shake the Megaverse®. But only for a short time, so please spread the word.

What else is there to say? Oh, a similar sale for PDF books is happening at the same time on DriveThruRPG.com. Take advantage of both sales while you can and enjoy.

A KICKSTARTER YOU MIGHT WANT TO SUPPORT – THE WORLD BETWEEN

Many of you know Sarah Aten from Gen Con, the Palladium Open House and her activities online. Sarah is a dear friend and a great helper. She and Wayne run the registers at Gen Con, the POH and other events, and she has plenty of Fantasy and gaming street cred. Well, it seems she has gotten tired of watching her husband, Brandon Aten and her brother, Matthew Orr (Rifts® Sovietski, The Rifter®) be creative in the gaming world, and has decided to write a Fantasy time travel novel entitled The World Between. Which sounds right up the alley for Palladium fans. She is funding it on Kickstarter right now thru June 3, 2019, and is looking for support. I always like to encourage people’s creativity, and I have seen Sarah’s talented side, so I will definitely be making my pledge this weekend. I hope many of you, especially those who know her, will do the same. For more details, here is the link to The World Between Kickstarter. Sarah, unleash your imagination! I look forward to getting my book.

What RPG Kickstarters Excite Creators? Pirates of Pugmire, Hearts of Wulin, Big Bad Con, and Memento Mori

This week, the creator of Pugmire, Big Bad Con, The Gauntlet Gaming Community, and Luna Publishing share what RPG Kickstarters they’re following.

Beyond sharing creator’s crowdfunding picks, for this week’s column I’m sharing a few picks of my own. But, they’re *not* crowdfunding projects, instead, they are products that are available to purchase now through DriveThruRPG or Modiphius Entertainment’s site.

Pirates of Pugmire – A Realms of Pugmire Tabletop RPG by Pugsteady and Onyx Path Publishing

END DATE: Thu, June 20 2019 1:59 PM EDT.

“Contribute to help us create a traditionally printed game book featuring pirates in the Realms of Pugmire – and get it into stores.”

Eddy Webb (Pugsteady) recommends:

Grimmerspace: A science-fiction/science-fantasy horror game with Sean Astin as the creative lead. And the art looks really fantastic. I’m curious to see where this goes!

Victorian Gothic & Adventure Soundscapes: I am a huge sucker for good, well-made background music, and there really isn’t much in the way of Victorian music. Now I can listen to these while I play Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective!”

Hearts of Wulin by The Gauntlet Gaming Community

END DATE: Sun, June 16 2019 8:00 PM EDT.

“A tabletop roleplaying game of wuxia melodrama, Powered by the Apocalypse.”

Lowell Francis (The Gauntlet Gaming Community) recommends:

“I just backed Hard Wired Island, an anime cyberpunk rpg with its own unique. It leans into an anime aesthetic, in particular drawing inspiration from 1990s media like Ghost in the Shell. I’m old enough to have lived through our local groups’ discovery of anime, passed around on VHS tapes. It reshaped how people played and saw R Talsorian’s Cyberpunk 2020. Hard Wired Island brings that back, but with an approach that explicitly considers the political dimension. I’m excited to see how it handles that. If you asked me five year ago what I thought of cyberpunk, I would have dismissed the whole genre. But that’s changed with new releases like The Veil’s PbtA approach and The Crisp Line for Fate. There’s a ton cool stuff being done with cyberpunk and Hard Wired Island feels like a new direction.

I’m also really excited for Good Society: An Expanded Acquaintance. I missed the original Kickstarter, so I’m glad to have the chance to get everything this time. Over the last year I’ve seen lots of people run Good Society on The Gauntlet, and I’ve been amazed at the variety of settings and reframings used. It says something about how the strength of the core concept. All of the expansion variants appeal to me, but I most dig the idea of doing a Jane Austen-esque game with a Harry Potter-Wizarding backdrop. Plus the books look amazing—first class. I love smart layout and presentation.”

Big Bad Con 2019 by Sean Nittner

END DATE: Thu, June 6 2019 9:59 AM EDT.

Big Bad Con is a tabletop and live action gaming convention built on great games and a welcoming community. Join us October 10-13 in Walnut Creek, CA!”

Sean Nittner (Big Bad Con) recommends:

“I’m excited about two games that both evoke some real nostalgia for me.

Raid Boss looks all kinds of fun to me. Like a mix of raiding in World of Warcraft (First 10-Person guild to end the Lich King on Malfurion, woo!), D&D 4th Edition (which was great for tactical combat), and the Dresden Files Co-Op (which I got to playtest early version of an have played so many times my cards are nearly worn through). I love seeing how different roles can synergize and and I just want to grab all those dice and chits and tokens. *grabby hands*

When you get down to Dungeon Crawling, let not mince words. I want to grab treasure and level up! The Maze is all about that. What happens in play is always so much more rewarding than backstory developed before the game so I’m very excited about the Renown Rule: Every character starts without a name. You earn one (and a title) through your great deeds! If Raid Boss takes me back to WoW, The Maze takes me back to Gauntlet and Rogue. Q that potion!”

Memento Mori : D&D 5E Victorian Gothic Campaign Setting by Luna Publishing

END DATE: Mon, June 17 2019 2:15 PM EDT.

Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) 5th Edition Compatible Campaign Setting”

Gregory Lucas (Luna Publishing) recommends:

Monster Adventure Terrain- 3D Customizable D&D World BuilderMonster Adventure Terrain is probably one of the best 3D terrain projects I’ve seen. It looks good. Comes Painted/Unpainted so you can customize. It’s probably a 7/10 in the looks while being 1/10 in complexity. Seriously these things are as easy to use as Legos. Makes building quick scenes a literal snap. Speed and flexibility are necessities at a game table for a GM when it comes to props and game aids. This has it all for me.

Afterlife: Wandering Souls. High Fantasy is a dime a dozen in the market. We’ve seen a lot of it. Unique visions are ripe on Kickstarter, and Afterlife: Wandering Souls is one of them. It reminds me of those odd one-off games DM’s used to play back before entire adventure paths were published. Afterlife has a beautiful and unique premise, while retaining a stunning and unique visual style.”

Beyond crowdfunding, there are some great products that recently dropped. I’m sharing my recommendations that I’m currently reading and playing.

City of Mist from Modiphius Entertainment. A large release using the Powered by the Apocalypse engine from Modiphius Entertainment (Star Trek, Conan, and, soon, Dune), this game is a high-end project that lets you play a noir superhero. The books look great, the concept is evocative, and I’m eager to play this game. More details in their press release here.

Legacy: Life Among the Ruins from Modiphius Entertainment. Another Modiphius Entertainment Powered by the Apocalypse offering, this one goes a different route, setting-wise. As well, this is three books, with two that focus on L:LAtR’s core setting – the post-post apocalypse where you’re the first wave of those rebuilding the world – and one that rewrites the game for a new setting. Free From the Yoke rewrites the game for a gritty medieval setting where you’re a restored nation that has just thrown off an empire. The GM runs a powerful family that each player must live with or fight against. More details in their press release here.

Heroic Dark (Early Edition) from Will Power Games. The creator of Synthicide, a bit of sci-fi RPG so good that after a test drive one-shot, we went directly into a campaign. Heroic Dark is a new game from the same creator, and its early edition is free on DriveThruRPG. I’m even more excited about this one because the GM of our Synthicide campaign, John McGuire, picked Heroic Dark as a must-play Gen Con game this year and we managed to snag one of the sessions. Really looking forward to it!

The Art of War for D&D Players from M.T. Black. M.T. Black is, among other things, a fellow freelancer on EN World, and he shared his DMsGuild product with me. The concept – “Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War, the seminal work on military strategy. Discover how you can use these ancient secrets to master the game of Dungeons & Dragons!” – is really solid and worthy of a read. It offers in-game strategy that feels right for a wuxia campaign or any d20-based game. Grab it for your table.

Keeping It Classy: The Barbarian from Kim Frandsen. I interviewed Kim, my former editor on the Open Gaming Network, about this project (here). If you’re looking for more spice and variety for your 5e barbarian, Kim has you covered. An Electrum Seller in it first few days on the DMsGuild, this project resinates with players looking for new Barbarian Paths (15 of them), a new race (Redscale Lizardfolk), and more. Want to do a party that’s a barbarian tribe, this book will make each tribe unique, power-wise.

Press Release: Hearts of Wulin funded in less than an hour on Kickstarter

Hearts of Wulin, an RPG of wuxia melodrama, funded in less than an hour.

Driven by the characters’ duties, desires, and entanglements with other characters, Hearts of Wulin draws on films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Chinese wuxia TV series like Legend of the Condor Heroes, and Chinese martial arts novels from the second half of the twentieth century. The game focuses on letting players tell stories steeped in wuxia melodrama, giving them roles as skilled martial artists in a world of rival clans, conspiracies, and obligations. Romance is as dangerous as a blade – and just as often hidden. Everyone has ties to factions, loves they can’t express, and secrets whose possible revelation will shake them to their core.

Launched on May 14th, 2019, the Kickstarter funded in less than an hour. Since then the stretch goals that it has met include full color interiors, enhanced material on the supernatural, an essay on combat description from the co-hosts of the Jianghu Hustle podcast; and an expansion using the system to explore turn-of-the-century San Francisco from designer Banana Chan. Upcoming stretch goals include settings and materials for Joseon dynasty Korea, Musketeer-era France, and cyberpunk.

Hearts of Wulin comes from The Gauntlet Gaming Community. For several years the Gauntlet has offered a massive online gaming calendar covering story games, OSR, and beyond. The community features multiple podcasts (including ENnie winner Fear of a Black Dragon), active moderated forums, a monthly zine (Codex), blog (featuring ENnie winner Age of Ravens). Hearts of Wulin co-authors Agatha Cheng and Lowell Francis have a deep love of the wuxia genre. Agatha co-hosts the Asians Represents Podcast (@aznsrepresent), while Lowell co-hosts The Gauntlet Podcast.

Playtest materials are available. An early version, the playtest packet includes only a fraction of the support text that will be in the final product. Nevertheless, it provides a tantalizing and addictive sense of what the final game will be like, and anyone with a basic understanding of how Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games work will be able to run a short campaign of Hearts of Wulin.

Hearts of Wulin is a joyous exercise in capturing the heart and soul of a beloved media genre in the the sublime form of a well-designed roleplaying game. Lowell and Agatha have seamlessly blended action, romance, humor, pathos, and a deep appreciation of source material ranging from classic Shaw Brothers films to modern serialized TV dramas, to produce a dynamic play experience that’ll make great stories even if you’re only passingly familiar with those works.” – Jim Crocker,JimLikesGames.com

The campaign ends Sunday, June 16th.

PRE-ORDERS FOR FREE LEAGUE’S ALIEN RPG BEGIN ON MAY 25 WITH A SURPRISE DEBUT OF THEIR FIRST CINEMATIC MODULE

Free League Publishing – May 22, 2019 17:10 BST

The ALIEN Roleplaying Game Pre-Order Bundle

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 22, 2019) – On May 25, 1979, Alien first graced the silver screen. Forty years after the Alien franchise first inspired and shocked the world, Free League Publishing has a xenomorphic surprise of their own in store. Quite literally.

Last month on Alien Day (4/26), Free League and 20th Century Fox Consumer Products announced their upcoming tabletop RPG series set within the Alien universe, which is set to release this holiday season. Yet for fans eager to explore that universe for themselves, they don’t need to wait any longer.

In celebration of the official 40th Anniversary this Saturday, Free League will offer a meaty 168-page Cinematic Starter Kit for their highly-anticipated Alien RPG – debuting their first Cinematic module Chariot of the Gods written by Alien RPG setting writer and sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska – as a complimentary bonus gift for anyone who pre-orders the Alien RPG Core Rulebook at alien-rpg.com. The Cinematic Starter Kit will be available for download as soon as the pre-order purchase is confirmed.

Based upon Free League’s award-winning Year Zero game engine, the full Alien RPG Core Rulebook contains 300+ pages of mythology, artwork, and custom mechanics for open-world campaigns and deep, diverse space explorations on the Frontier. While Campaign Mode provides the tools for long-term gameplay, Cinematic Mode challenges players to start and complete an accessible, authentic tabletop RPG experience in one game session with no prior preparation necessary. A streamlined version of the Year Zero engine, Cinematics deliver only the most crucial game rules for each scenario with pre-generated characters, stories, and challenges – capturing the intense drama of an Alien film.

Free League has big plans for Alien and their new Cinematic mode, which is why they’re sharing the Starter Kit months ahead of the Core Rulebook.

“We’re trying something new and we want to know what people think,” says Free League co-founder and Alien RPG game director Tomas Härenstam. “In fact, anyone who pre-orders the Core Rulebook will receive exclusive access to our development process with opportunities to provide feedback and earn a play-tester credit in the final publication.”

The Starter Kit isn’t the last Cinematic module that fans can expect from Free League. “Chariot is the first in a trilogy of Cinematic modules from Andrew E.C. Gaska in the future,” shares Härenstam. Each Cinematic in the trilogy will explore a different style of gameplay, introducing a different perspective in the Alien universe and a different source of antagonism. Yet while each Cinematic module is designed as a stand-alone experience with new characters, settings, and challenges, the overarching narrative of the trilogy is connected – telling one complete, canonical story by the end.

“That’s what so liberating/challenging about designing and playing in Cinematic mode. You could be space truckers one session. Colonial Marines the next,” says Gaska. “The fun is figuring out how to work together, learn on the fly when the stakes are high, and try your best to survive the night. The constraints really make the whole experience feel more thrilling and terrifying. Like you’ve been dropped into your own Alien movie. And even if your character dies, the night is far from over for you as a player.”

As all characters aren’t likely to survive, Cinematics are engineered with death and replay value in mind, providing an ensemble cast of playable characters and branching narratives with multiple story paths and possible endings. “It’s rewarding to play and replay each Cinematic event, as you learn with experience, try new characters and creative solutions, and encounter new challenges over time,” shares Gaska.

Starting on May 25, Free League will accept pre-orders for the Alien tabletop RPG Core Rulebook and a variety of limited-edition 40th Anniversary goodies and gear exclusively at alien-rpg.com:
