ABOUT SYMBAROUM
At the heart of Symbaroum lies the dark forest of Davokar that calls out to be explored, for the trees are covering the remnants of an empire which fell into ruin long ago. But the road into its depths lays far from open and the shadows beneath the foliage are fraught with danger.

Join the adventure in this brand-new 5E adaptation of the dark fantasy game Symbaroum. Explore the vast forests in the hunt for treasures, lost wisdoms, and fame. Seek out the barbarian clans to trade or plunder. Establish your base of power among princes, guilds, or rebellious refugees in the capital. And try and survive encounters with trolls, dark-minded beasts, and undead warlords.

But always remember the warnings spoken by the wardens of the forest. Tread carefully and do not disturb the ruins of old, for ancient evil stirs in its sleep.

The horrors of Davokar are about to awaken…

The ALIEN RPG Launched on Virtual Tabletop Platforms – Stay Alive If You Can

Free League Publishing – Oct 27, 2020 14:00 GMT

“I can’t lie to you about your chances, but … you have my sympathies.”

Space is vast, dark, and not your friend. Now you and your crew can explore the ALIEN universe through virtual tabletop gaming. The award-winning official ALIEN RPG was launched today on two VTT platforms: Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds.

At Roll20, you can find a virtual tabletop version of the ALIEN RPG Starter Set, including all the rules you need to play and the full-length cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods, written by scifi author Andrew E.C. Gaska. On the platform you can also find the scenario Destroyer of Worlds, a sequel to Chariot of the Gods also written by Gaska and requiring only the Starter Set to play.

On Fantasy Grounds, you can find the ALIEN RPG core rulebook, a full conversion of the hardcover book of a massive 392 pages, as well as the Chariot of the Gods and Destroyer of Worlds scenarios.

All modules are fully integrated with the VTT platforms, with online maps and diagrams, player handouts ready to share, online character sheets, customized virtual dice roller, and more.

The core rulebook for the official ALIEN roleplaying game was released in December 2019 in partnership with 20th Century Studios. The game immediately sold out its first print run and swiftly entered the Top-5 list of best-selling tabletop RPGs in the fall of 2019. It won the ENNIE Award for Best Game 2020 and the People’s Choice Award for Best RPG at the UK Game Expo. The game is currently being translated into seven languages.

The award-winning Tales From the Loop RPG was the first Free League title to launch on Roll20, and the Symbaroum dark fantasy RPG is available on Fantasy Grounds. More games from the game portfolio will be launched on virtual tabletop platforms in a near future.

Alien RPG – Review quotes:

“Move over, Dungeons & Dragons, Swedish publisher Free League has released Alien: The Roleplaying Game, and it is as great as it is terrifying.”

It’s impressive, then, that Free League has been able to craft a tabletop roleplaying game that can conjure up that same pitch-dark dread from the safety of your kitchen table.”

*A set each of ten engraved Base Dice and ten Stress Dice, designed specifically for the ALIEN roleplaying game

The 392-page core rulebook for the official ALIEN roleplaying game was released in December 2019. The game immediately sold out its first print run and swiftly entered the Top-5 list of best-selling tabletop RPGs in the fall of 2019. The game is currently being translated into seven languages.

Kickstarter for Twilight: 2000 by Free League Funded in Seven Minutes

Free League Publishing – Aug 12, 2020 14:19 BST

The Kickstarter for the edition of the classic roleplaying game Twilight: 2000 was launched today by Free League Publishing. The new retro-apocalyptic edition goes back to the roots of the franchise with a boxed set for sandbox roleplaying in the devastation of the World War III That Never Was. The Kickstarter reached its base funding goal in just seven minutes.

A classic roleplaying game returns. The new edition of Twilight: 2000, published in partnership with Game Designers’ Workshop (GDW) and Amargosa Press, will be the fourth in the series, the first being released by GDW in 1984. Just like the original version, the new edition is set in a year 2000 devastated by war – now in an alternate timeline where the Moscow Coup of 1991 succeeded and the Soviet Union never collapsed.

In the game, players take roles of survivors in the aftermath of World War III – soldiers or civilians. Their goal, beyond surviving for another day, can be to find a way back home, to carve out their own fiefdom where they are, to find out more about the mysterious Operation Reset, and maybe, just maybe, make the world a little bit better again.

The core gameplay uses a “hexcrawling” system established in the post-apocalyptic Mutant: Year Zero and survival fantasy Forbidden Lands RPGs (both Silver ENNIE winners for Best Rules, in 2015 and 2019), developing it further to fit the gritty world of Twilight: 2000. The core rules are built on the Year Zero Engine used in those games (as well as in the ALIEN RPG, winner of the Gold ENNIE for Best Game 2020), but heavily adapted to fit Twilight: 2000 and its focus on gear and gritty realism.

“Crypt of the Mellified Mage” Module For Award-Winning Forbidden Lands RPG Launched Today

Free League Publishing – Jul 30, 2020 14:18 BST

As Free League’s second Gen Con release this year, the Crypt of the Mellified Mage adventure module was officially launched today. The book compiles four thrilling dungeons and other adventure locations for the multiple award-winning Forbidden Lands tabletop roleplaying game.

Crypt of the Mellified Mage lets players visit a dungeon of dripping honey, explore a firing pit for magical pottery, stand in awe of the temple of a monkey king, and go on a dizzying tour through the mind of a mad mage.

The beautifully illustrated hardcover book is now available at the Free League webshop, and in digital format at DrivethruRPG. The book will soon also be available in general retail worldwide.

Forbidden Lands is a new take on classic fantasy roleplaying. In this sandbox survival roleplaying game, player characters are not heroes sent on missions dictated by others – instead, they are raiders and rogues bent on making their own mark on a cursed world. They will discover lost tombs, fight terrible monsters, wander the wild lands, and if they live long enough, build their own stronghold to defend.

REVIEWS OF FORBIDDEN LANDS:

“It’s like somone took hazy childhood memories of a classic D&D game and mixed them with a dash of bleak Scandinavian darkness.” –Tabletop Magazine

“Superbly packaged, Forbidden Lands is a pleasing combination of ‘Old School’ nostalgia and fast, simple mechanics with unobtrusive narrative elements designed to bring aspects of the character into play. Its setting offers scope for the player characters to develop not just personally, but also in terms of their place in the world.” –Reviews from R’lyeh

“This may be the most perfect role-playing game product I’ve ever seen.” –Plot Points RPG Podcast

Winner of four ENnie Awards 2019!

  • Best Rules (Silver)
  • Best Cartography (Gold)

The Bitter Reach – Epic Campaign Module For Award-Winning Forbidden Lands RPG Launched Today

Free League Publishing – Jun 23, 2020 15:42 BST

The Bitter Reach – Forbidden Lands

The Bitter Reach epic campaign module for the multiple award-winning Forbidden Lands tabletop roleplaying game was officially launched today by Free League Publishing, makers of the official ALIEN RPG. The massive book expands the Forbidden Lands game with a huge map to hexcrawl, new rules, encounters and monsters, and a full campaign to play.

In the southern lands, elders speak of cold storms from the north. Cursed voices borne on the icy winds whisper of secrets from ages past that would plunge realms and kin into ruin if only someone could understand these ancient words. They are the desperate confessions of the lost. They are the legends of the Bitter Reach.

The 312-page beautifully illustrated hardcover book is now available at the Free League webshop, along with the The Bitter Reach Map & Cards Pack, containing a huge double-sided color map of the Bitter Reach (format 720 x 520 mm), a sheet of stickers for adventure sites and gravestones, and custom playing cards for unique mounts and magical artifacts.

Both products will soon be available in general retail worldwide.

Game Master’s Guide For Acclaimed Dark Fantasy RPG Symbaroum Coming June 2

Free League Publishing – May 26, 2020 14:00 BST

The Game Master’s Guide and Adventure Pack 4

Free League Publishing, creators of the official ALIEN roleplaying game, today announced that the worldwide release of the official Game Master’s Guide for the acclaimed dark fantasy roleplaying game Symbaroum, is set to June 2, 2020. With the Game Master’s Guide, Symbaroum’s collection of core books is complete.

The book is set to release next week, but it can be purchased today in the Free League webshop, alone or bundled with Adventure Pack 4, which will be officially launched later this year.

The Game Master’s Guide features three sections, meant to inspire and support Game Masters when it comes to everything from the creation of homebrew adventures to managing sessions around the gaming table:

  • The Adventure section, with chapters on the design of game worlds, chronicles, adventure landscapes and of adventures set in the Underworld, Yonderworld and Spirit World. It also offers tips regarding how to construct scenarios for experienced player characters, and guidelines for Troupe Play in Symbaroum.
  • The Challenges section, containing alternative rules for pitched battles, advanced traps and social challenges. Adding to this are chapters on Ceremonial Magic (including sixteen ceremonies), expeditions in Davokar, exploration of ruins, the design of legendary creatures and rules for handling player characters owning and managing an estate or smaller domain.
  • The Rewards Section, which offers suggestions on different ways of rewarding player characters and their players, aside from Experience and shiny coins. The chapters also present guidelines for designing what in Symbaroum are called Curiosities, Mystical Treasures and Artifacts, after which the book is rounded off with the description of no less than twenty seven artifacts – all of them with a unique adventure set-up.

Adventure Pack 4 is a 112-page hardcover book, including two scenarios that in different ways relate to the growing internal divisions within the Ambrian realm. Call of the Dark plays out in the northern territories of the Lost Land of Alberetor, where the player characters will accompany a lowborn noble who is looking to prove the status of her family. The second adventure, Retribution, initially deals with the search for a person who has gone missing in the city of Kurun, but is soon shown to involve events which may have serious consequences for the relationship between the peoples of the Davokar region.

The dark fantasy roleplaying game Symbaroum was launched in 2015 and has captured the imagination of ever growing crowd of gamers with its evocative art and rich game setting.

“Symbaroum excels in every single aspect of game design: the setting, the rules, the layout, the art.”
– Antonios S, RPGnet

“The simple system and rich setting, thick with dark and evocative imagery, makes this a worthy consideration for new and experienced gamers alike.”
– Paul Baldowski, GeekNative

“All in all, this is a stunning piece of work. It has all the sophistication of 13th Age, the mechanical beauty of Dungeon World, and the dark attractiveness of Warhammer Fantasy in a comprehensive and elegant game.”
– Rodney Orpheus, Medium

PRESS RELEASE: New Edition of Classic RPG Twilight: 2000 Announced by Free League Publishing

New Edition of Classic RPG Twilight: 2000 Announced by Free League Publishing

Free League Publishing – May 13, 2020 14:01 BST

Twilight: 2000, 4th Edition

A new edition of the classic roleplaying game Twilight: 2000 was announced today by Free League Publishing, makers of the ALIEN RPG, in partnership with Game Designers’ Workshop and Amargosa Press. The new edition goes back to the roots of the franchise with a boxed set for sandbox roleplaying in the devastation of World War III. It will come to Kickstarter in August, to be released in early 2021.

The new edition of the apocalyptic RPG Twilight: 2000 will be the fourth in the series, the first being released by Game Designers’ Workshop in 1984. Just like the original version, the new edition is set in a year 2000 devastated by war – now in an alternate timeline where the Moscow Coup of 1991 succeeded and the Soviet Union never collapsed.

“The first edition of Twilight: 2000 was an iconic game for me back in the ’80s, and we are humbled and honored to work with Marc Miller and Game Designers’ Workshop to bring a new edition to life. The original game was really ahead of its time. Our goal is to build on the amazing sandbox survival gameplay and develop it further, making it more accessible using the tools of modern game design,” says lead game designer and Free League founder Tomas Härenstam.

“When I saw this proposal to revisit the Twilight universe, I signed on immediately. As I have seen the work proceed, I have not been disappointed, and I look forward to seeing this project become reality,” says Marc Miller of Far Future Enterprises and co-founder of Game Designers’ Workshop.

Also part of the project are Amargosa Press (who have recently announced the new Dark Conspiracy 4th Edition RPG), Polish RPG publisher Black Monk Games (who will act as a consultant on the Poland in 2000 AD game setting as well as publish a Polish edition of the game), and Far Future Enterprises (who publishes the fifth edition of the Traveller science-fiction roleplaying game).

The design team is led by Tomas Härenstam (ALIEN RPGForbidden Lands, Mutant: Year Zero), with setting and scenario writing by Chris Lites (Conan, Over the Edge), editing by Angus Abranson (Doctor Who, The One Ring), interior art by Niklas Brant (Forbidden Lands), cover art by Martin Grip (ALIEN RPGSymbaroum), and maps by Tobias Tranell (Forbidden Lands). Several active and retired servicemen from the U.S. military are assigned to the project as consultants.

“Twilight: 2000 was a favorite of ours at school in the ’80s, with many a lunch hour spent salvaging what we could as we traveled across the ruins of Europe trying to survive. I’m honored to be involved in a new edition, and being able to work with the Free League is a fantastic bonus!” says Angus Abranson of Amargosa Press.

Just like the original game, the new edition of Twilight: 2000 is set in a Poland devastated by war, but the game also offers an alternative Swedish setting, as well as tools for placing the game anywhere in the world.

The core rules are built on the Year Zero Engine used in those games (as well as in the ALIEN RPG), but heavily adapted to fit Twilight: 2000 and its focus on gear and gritty realism.

More information about the new edition of Twilight: 2000 will be forthcoming soon.

Free League Publishing – Apr 26, 2020 14:01 BST

The ALIEN RPG Starter Set and the Destroyer of Worlds Cinematic Module are coming this August.

Free League Publishing and 20th Century Studios are proud to announce not one but two major expansions for the official ALIEN tabletop roleplaying game, released last December to universal acclaim. This August will see the release of a boxed Starter Set, as well as a brand-new Cinematic module entitled Destroyer of Worlds. Both titles can be pre-ordered from the ALIEN RPG website as of today in honor of ALIEN DAY, the annual 4/26 celebration of the ALIEN franchise and fandom.

The ALIEN RPG Starter Set is designed to be the perfect entry point into the game and the ALIEN universe. Affordably priced at $49.99, it contains everything needed to start playing, including an abridged 104-page softcover quickstart of the core rules, 20 custom dice, reference cards, character handouts, a huge starmap, and the complete Cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods by sci-fi author Andrew E.C. Gaska.

Destroyer of Worlds, also penned by Gaska, is a continuation of the story from Chariot, this time focusing upon an iconic type of character from the ALIEN universe: the Colonial Marine. A team of Colonial Marines get dropped onto the moon Ariaricus to handle a growing insurgency, but soon find themselves fighting for their lives against enemies beyond their worst nightmares. Priced at $29.99, the Destroyer of Worlds Cinematic scenario will come in a boxed set, including maps, handouts, and cards for a fully immersive tabletop experience.

The 392-page core rulebook for the official ALIEN roleplaying game was released in December 2019 along with a host of supplements. The game immediately sold out its first print run and swiftly entered the Top-5 list of best-selling tabletop RPGs in the fall of 2019. The game is currently being translated into seven languages, and was recently nominated for an Origins Award for Best RPG of the Year.

Pre-order the ALIEN RPG Starter Set and Destroyer of Worlds today on alien-rpg.com. Then follow Free League on Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and previews of the ALIEN products soon to come.

REVIEW QUOTES:

“Move over, Dungeons & Dragons, Swedish publisher Free League has released Alien: The Roleplaying Game, and it is as great as it is terrifying.”
–The Gamer

“Free League Publishing has knocked it out of the orbit. It’s an interstellar masterpiece that honors the Alien legacy and builds on the stories that made the series great. It’s a sci-fi adventure that roleplaying fans will surely love, and it’s an accessible system for anyone interested in a good story and a rollicking good time.”
–GameTyrant

“The real horror of Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi flick Alien has always been the creeping, slithering fear of the unknown. It’s impressive, then, that Free League has been able to craft a tabletop roleplaying game that can conjure up that same pitch-dark dread from the safety of your kitchen table.”

The Kickstarter for Tales From the Loop – The Board Game was launched today by Free League Publishing. The game, based on the universe created by artist and author Simon Stålenhag recently adapted to a tv series on Amazon Prime Video, offers cooperative gameplay using robot miniatures by Paolo Parente’s Dust Studio. A complete Print ‘n Play kit can be downloaded for free from the Kickstarter.

Simon Stålenhag is the internationally lauded artist and author of Tales From the Loop and Things From the Flood, narrative art books published by Free League that stunned the world with a vision of an alternate Scandinavia in the 1980s and ‘90s, where technology invaded tranquil landscapes to form an entirely new universe of the eerie and the nostalgic.

In 2017, Free League published a tabletop roleplaying game based on Tales From the Loop, which went on to win five Gold ENnie Awards, including Best Game and Product of the Year. A tv series adaptation of Tales From the Loop was launched just a few days ago on Amazon Prime Video.

Tales From the Loop – The Board Game lets players take another step into the amazing world of the Loop. In the 1-5 players take the roles of teenagers who investigate the mysteries originating from the Loop, a huge underground science facility with strange effects on the suburban landscapes around it – but they also need to make sure they’re home in time for dinner!

Tales From the Loop – The Boardgame is designed by Martin Takaichi and includes high-quality miniatures by Paolo Parente’s Dust Studio.

To let players try out Tales From the Loop – The Board Game for themselves, Free League provides a Print ‘n Play kit of the current Alpha game prototype for download from the Kickstarter page. The Print ‘n Play kit includes four characters and one scenario to play.

You can find the Kickstarter here.

Blackened Artpunk RPG MÖRK BORG To Be Released February 25 By Free League Publishing

Free League Publishing – Feb 04, 2020 13:00 GMT

MÖRK BORG Artpunk RPG coming February 25

Following a Kickstarter campaign fully funded in roughly 66.6 minutes, blackened artpunk RPG MÖRK BORG gets its worldwide release on February 25. Designed by Ockult Örtmästare Games and Stockholm Kartell, MÖRK BORG is the first RPG to be published under Free League Workshop, Free League Publishing’s upcoming sublabel for selected externally developed games.

MÖRK BORG is a pitch-black apocalyptic fantasy RPG about lost souls and fools seeking redemption, forgiveness or the last remaining riches in a bleak and decaying world. Who are you? The tomb-robber with silver glittering between cracked fingernails? The mystic who would bend the world’s heart away from it’s inevitable end? The world is dying. And you with it.

A doom metal album of a game. A spiked flail to the face. Rules light, heavy everything else.

MÖRK BORG is already available to pre-order in the Free League webshop, and will be available in select retail stores from February 25.

Confront power-draining necromancers, skulking skeletal warriors and backstabbing wickheads. Wander the Valley of the Unfortunate Undead, the catacombs beneath the Bergen Chrypt or the bedevilled Sarkash forest. But leave hope behind – the world’s cruel fate is sealed, and all your vain heroic efforts are destined to end in death and dismay. Or are they?

MÖRK BORG is a complete game in the OSR genre, that can be played as is or be picked apart for use in your own homebrew. The rules are easily made compatible with most other major fantasy roleplaying games. Within the book you’ll find:

  • A brief look at this dying world. From The Two-Headed Basilisks’ gothic cathedral in Galgenbeck and Blood-countess Anthelia’s limestone palace, to the fields of death in Graven-Tosk and the barren wastes of Kergüs.
  • The Calendar of Nechrubel, that decides the speed of the world’s demise.
  • 20 occult Powers that let you bend reality, and just as many magical catastrophes for when you disastrously fail.
  • Optional rules which bring more depth to the game. Omens let you turn bad luck into a slightly better one. Classes with unique traits and quirks, and tables that will bring life into your character.
  • 12 creatures to be murdered by.
  • Game master tools such as tables for corpse plundering, occult treasure, adventure sparks, dungeon generating and other devilry.
  • The introductory dungeon crawl scenario Rotblack Sludge, where you investigate a forgotten part of the Shadow King’s enormous ruin palace. Cannibal warlocks, poison peddlers from beyond the void and hungry gutworms await.

MÖRK BORG is designed by Pelle Nilsson (Ockult Örtmästare Games) and Johan Nohr (Stockholm Kartell). The game is published by Free League Publishing and is available in Swedish and English. The English text is edited and cursed by Patrick Stuart (Veins of the Earth, Silent Titans).

The xenomorphs are coming to game night! On December 10, Free League Publishing and 20th Century Fox will launch the official ALIEN tabletop roleplaying game. The massive 392-page core rulebook will be released along with a host of supplements.

Taking place shortly after the events of Aliens, the RPG will propel players into the vast possibilities of the Outer Rim Frontier. From the pioneering colonists and scientists to the ever-present Company reps and Colonial Marines, the game promises a diverse range of characters and gameplay experiences far beyond the staple cat-and-mouse suspense and survival horror of the franchise.

The ALIEN RPG is a beautifully illustrated full-color hardcover book, both presenting the world of ALIEN in the year 2183 and a fast and effective ruleset designed specifically to enhance the ALIEN experience. The game can be played in two distinct game modes: Cinematic play and Campaign play.

Cinematic play is based on pre-made scenarios that emulate the dramatic arc of an ALIEN film. Designed to be played in a single session, this game mode emphasizes high stakes and fast and brutal play. Player characters are not all expected to survive. The core rulebook will be published alongside the complete Cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods by sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska, who is also the setting writer and canon consultant for the RPG. Campaign play is designed for longer continuous play with the same cast of characters over many game sessions, letting players explore the ALIEN universe freely, sandbox style.

The rules of the game are designed by game director Tomas Härenstam and based on the Year Zero Engine, used in award-winning games such as Tales From the Loop, Forbidden Lands, and Mutant: Year Zero, but adapted and further developed to fully support and enhance the core themes of ALIEN: horror and action in the cold darkness of space.

The core rulebook will be launched alongside a range of supplements, inlucuding the Chariot of the Gods scenario, custom dice, a GM Screen, and a set of useful maps and markers. All items will be available on the Free League website and in retail stores worldwide from December 10.

THE FUTURE

The launch of the ALIEN RPG is just the first step of a long-term licensing partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products, drawing upon four decades of world-building within this beloved universe. The first expansions to the core game are planned for August 2020.

The Fox-Free League licensing deal was brokered by Joe LeFavi of Genuine Entertainment, who manages the license on behalf of Free League and serve as an editor on the game series. Alien is the latest in a slew of high-profile tabletop deals by LeFavi, including the master tabletop gaming license for Dune, the tabletop RPG series for Altered Carbon, and multiple brand extensions of World of Darkness.

PRESS RELEASE: Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying by Free League Publishing Funded in 13 Minutes on Kickstarter

Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying by Free League Publishing Funded in 13 Minutes on Kickstarter

Free League Publishing – Nov 05, 2019 13:18 GMT

Today, the Kickstarter for the new Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying game line was launched by Free League Publishing, makers of the Tales From the Loop and ALIEN RPGs. Vaesen presents a unique take on Gothic horror roleplaying, in a dark Nordic setting steeped in folklore and old myths of Scandinavia. The Kickstarter reached its base funding goal in just 13 minutes.

In dark forests, beyond the mountains, by black lakes in hidden groves. At your doorstep. In the shadows, something stirs. Strange beings. Twisted creatures, lurking at the edge of vision. Watching. Waiting. Unseen by most, but not by you. You see them for what they really are.

Vaesen.

Written by award-winning author Nils Hintze (Tales From the Loop RPG) and based on the work of Swedish illustrator and author Johan EgerkransVaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying presents a dark Gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and old myths of Scandinavia. The game mechanics use an adapted version of the award-winning Year Zero Engine.

Vaesen takes place in the Mythic North – northern Europe of the nineteenth century, but not as we know it today. A land where the myths are real. A cold reach covered by vast forests, its few cities lonely beacons of industry and enlightenment – a new civilization dawning. But in the countryside, the old ways still hold sway. There, people know what lurks in the dark.

They know to fear it.

In Vaesen, the players take the roles of individuals born different. They have the Sight – the ability to see what ordinary people cannot. They know that vaesen have lived beside humanity for untold centuries, in an uneasy peace. Not anymore. Rumors spread of kittens born with two heads, streams red from blood, groves lulling children into eternal sleep, fairies dancing through villages, luring the young into the woods to be forever enthralled.

Embarking on journeys to remote villages in the wilderness, the players will uncover the secrets of the Mythic North. Armed with nothing but their courage, conviction, and ability to see the supernatural, they will face the creatures of the forest.

You can find the Kickstarter here.
